Listing of heritage items in the Christchurch City and Banks Peninsula District Plans conveys both benefits and responsibilities to owners.

Benefits include recognition of the heritage values of the items, specialist advice (as above), and assisting with funding to help meet the ongoing costs of conserving the heritage fabric and values of the items.  Resource consent from Council is required for most alterations to, or demolition of listed heritage items in order to manage and record change, so that items are protected for the enjoyment of present and future generations.
