High Street Upgrade: road closure (between Tuam and St Asaph Streets)

Update

What

We are closing High Street, between Tuam and St Asaph Streets, to vehicles (cyclist and pedestrian access will remain open).

Why

To improve safety and minimise confusion for road users. This temporary road closure was expected to begin at Stage 3 of this project but is being brought forward into Stage 2, due to active review of safety.

Where

High Street, Central City, between Tuam and St Asaph Street.

When

Monday 15 April 2024 to end of June 2024. Monday to Sunday - at all times.

Contact

The contractor is CORDE. Phone 03 318 8320, Monday to Sunday, 8am to 5pm or email highstreet@corde.nz

Details

  • Throughout construction, we actively monitor and review our traffic management to ensure it is effective and safe for all users. This includes monitoring traffic movements and the number of people using the road, cycleways and footpaths.
  • Since we have moved to Stage 2 of the High Street Upgrade, we have seen a reduced number of vehicles using the road. We’ve also observed that the frequent changes to the cycle and pedestrian routes have caused confusion for some users.
  • To address this, we will be temporarily closing High Street (from Tuam Street to St Asaph/Madras Streets) to vehicles, which will allow us to simplify the cycle and pedestrian lanes, reduce confusion and improve safety.
  • This temporary road closure was originally planned to take place during Stage 3 of the project, when we move to work in the middle of the road, so this change will bring the road closure forward by four weeks. The temporary closure will remain in place until the works are completed in June 2024.
  • The Stage 2 works along the west side of the street will continue as planned, and pedestrian access to businesses will be maintained at all times.
  • The extra space provided by the road closure will also mean that the construction team can operate more efficiently and in a safer environment.

Traffic Impacts (see map below)

  • Vehicle traffic will be required to follow a detour along Tuam Street – please follow detour signage.
  • Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times on the existing footpaths on both sides of the street.  Please follow signage.

  • Cyclists will use a dedicated two-way cycle lane on the east side of the street, (Ara side) where the works have already been completed.  Signage will be in place at both ends of High Street.

  • Deliveries can still be made by using the loading bay on St Asaph Street adjacent to The Hokitika Sandwich Company. If you have any specific delivery requirements, please contact CORDE’s site manager, Dan Williams, on 027 546 5074 for assistance.
  • On-street parking continues to be temporarily removed to allow space for the works.
