Details

From Sunday 7 September 2025, we will be upgrading the traffic signals at the Fitzgerald Avenue and St Asaph Street intersection. Until late September, our contractors will work 24 hours a day at the intersection where required. This will help us to reduce the overall disruption in the area.

Temporary traffic management will be in place on Fitzgerald Avenue and St Asaph Street while we complete this work.

Traffic impacts:

  • Fitzgerald Avenue will be reduced to one lane in each direction at all times with right hand turns into St Asaph Street removed for the duration of the works.
  • St Asaph Street (east of Fitzgerald Ave, heading away from the city centre) will be closed 24/7 for the duration of the works.
  • St Asaph Street (west of Fitzgerald Ave, heading towards the city centre) will be closed nightly between 6pm and 6am and reopened each morning to single lane access from Fitzgerald Ave (left hand turns only).
  • At times, temporary traffic lights will be installed on Fitzgerald Ave to facilitate safe crossing points for pedestrians.
  • Detours will be in place. Please follow all signage and directions from staff on site.
  • A 30 km/h speed limit will be in place so we can keep our team and everyone safe.
  • We will need to temporarily remove on-street parking to allow space for the works.
  • Cyclists will need to merge with traffic through the site.

Information for residents and businesses

  • Access to properties and businesses for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained around the work site where possible.
  • We will help people to get around the site. Please advise our team if you have specific requirements e.g. medical visits, large deliveries, home help or any planned works.
  • There will be increased construction noise and vibration at times, and we will do our best to keep this to a minimum.
  • The work will have no impact on any services such as water, electricity, telecommunications and gas.
  • The timing of the work and certain activities will depend on the weather and the roads
  • Please put your bins out as usual by 6am on your collection day. Our team will move them and return them if needed.

We know this work can be disruptive, and we appreciate your co-operation and understanding.

Ngā mihi nui, thanks for your patience while we work at this intersection.
