Antigua Street Cycle Network and Watermain works - *Nightworks* and one-way system

What

We’ll be making road and cycle improvements, including the installation of separated cycleways (both directions), raised speed thresholds and new road surfacing. We will also be renewing the watermain from Moorhouse Avenue to St Asaph Street.

Why

We are improving safety for all users on Antigua Street between St Asaph Street and Moorhouse Avenue and providing the cycle connection between the Quarryman’s Trail Major Cycleway and the city centre cycle routes. The watermain is also being upgraded and replaced.

Where

Antigua Street from St Asaph Street to Moorhouse Avenue, Central City.

When

Sunday 18 May 2025 to early November 2025 (7am–6pm and some nights) (weather/site condition dependent).

Contact

The contractor is Fulton Hogan on 0800 7623 34 (0800 ROAD FH) Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, or email cant.info@fultonhogan.com. After business hours, please feel free to call us if the matter is urgent.

Details

Antigua Street is used by approximately 1200-1500 cyclists every day and is the final connection for one of our busiest cycleways, Quarrymans Trail.

This project includes the installation of separated cycleways in both directions, new drainage, new kerb and channel, new western footpath, a raised pedestrian/cycle crossing south of Halkett Street, raised speed thresholds at both ends of the street and new landscaping along the street. We’ll also upgrade the watermain from Moorhouse Avenue to St Asaph Street. This work has been planned to be completed in time for the opening of Parakiore Recreation and Sport Centre in late 2025.

Sunday 18 May – Friday 23 May 2025 (7pm – 6am) *Nightworks*

Works will begin on Sunday 18 May 2025 with investigations to identify and locate existing underground services, as well as any potential clashes or risks to construction. This work will take place overnight, and whilst underway, Antigua Street will be closed to all traffic from 7pm – 6am. There will be no access in or out during this time for vehicles and cyclists – please follow the signposted detour routes, see map above. Pedestrian access will be maintained during this time. Please note: access for emergency services will be provided, if required.

There will also be a northbound one-way traffic management system installed on Antigua Street, between Hazeldean Road and Moorhouse Avenue, along with lane drops on Moorhouse Ave.

Monday 26 May to early November – One- way system

From Monday 26 May, we will be starting construction of the Antigua Street cycle connection works and watermain upgrade. To ensure the safety of both road users and our crews, a northbound one-way traffic management system will be installed on Antigua Street, between Moorhouse Avenue and St Asaph Street.

Traffic impacts – one-way traffic management system

  • Antigua Street will be one-way northbound from Moorhouse Avenue to St Asaph Street. Business access will be provided
from Moorhouse Avenue into Antigua Street.
  • Northbound traffic will be unaffected, with southbound traffic detoured via Hagley Avenue to Selwyn Street to Moorhouse Avenue  – please follow the detour signs.
  • Cyclists will be able to access Antigua Street in both directions. Southbound cyclists will use a temporary separated cycle lane on the east side of the road, and northbound cyclists will share the traffic lane with other northbound vehicles. This means that people on bikes heading north need to ride in the lane as there is no room for vehicles to pass. While cyclists may not be going at 30km/h, please be patient; this will only add a few seconds to your journey time.
  • We will need to restrict on-street parking to ensure we have a safe working space so will place no parking cones
out before we start work. We will aim to minimise parking restrictions as much as possible.
  • Please allow extra travel time if you will be affected by the one-way system.

Other details

Please remember 30km/h is the maximum speed allowed through the work site. This limit is in place to keep the crews working in the area and everyone using the road safe. Depending on the conditions, it could be appropriate to reduce your speed further.

Please be on the lookout for changes in traffic management and follow the signs.

Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times. If you need to be escorted, please speak to staff onsite.

There will be increased construction noise and vibration at times, but we will do our best to keep this to a minimum.

The timing of the work and certain activities will depend on the weather and the condition of the roads. We will provide updates if there are changes to the planned works.
