Details

The Canterbury Earthquake Sequence of 2010-11 resulted in the Crown’s 'red-zoning’ and ultimate removal of approximately 5,500 residential properties along the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor (OARC).

Some Council Parks (including Avon Park) and other assets were included within this area, the result being the creation of 602 hectares of continuous 'green spine' connecting the Central Business District (CBD) with New Brighton as outlined in the OARC Regeneration Plan.

As part of this work CCC have engaged Citycare Property to undertake the redevelopment of Avon Park.

A new path through the centre of the park will form an integral section of the City to Sea Pathway, from Snell Bridge through to Kerrs Reach.

The lower terrace of the park will be returned to a low-lying native wetland, and the upper terrace of the park will include a new playing field, basketball court, accessible playground, pump track and communal picnic areas.

The section of Avonside Drive between Kerrs Road and Snell Bridge will be closed permanently, allowing a direct connection from the wetland area through to the river.

Additional traffic management will be in place during the works, which will also require the closure of Avonside Drive between Kerrs Road and Wainoni Road.
