Travis/Bower/Rookwood intersection – safety improvements

Update

What

We’re making safety improvements at the Travis Road, Bower Avenue, Rookwood Avenue roundabout. We’re installing new median islands, speed humps, kerbs, stormwater sumps, and creating a shared lane with sharrow markings to make cyclists more visible when travelling through the roundabout.

Where

At the intersection of Travis Road, Bower Avenue and Rookwood Avenue, New Brighton.

Details

Since starting work on 8 April, we’ve completed the portion of work that required the road closure of Bower Avenue north of the roundabout.

From Tuesday 23 April, we’re changing the traffic management to allow us to work on the intersection south of the roundabout.

To complete the second phase of work we need to close Bower Avenue south of the roundabout and install a manual three-way stop/go system at the other three approaches.

While this is in place:

  • Traffic travelling along Travis Road and Rookwood Avenue will be able to go straight through the roundabout from either direction.
  • Left turns will be restricted for cars approaching the roundabout along Rookwood Avenue and right turns will be restricted for cars approaching the roundabout along Travis Road.
  • Cars travelling northbound along Bower Avenue will be detoured via Palmers Road.
  • Cars travelling southbound along Bower Avenue can turn left or right at the roundabout but will not be able to continue on to Bower Avenue south of the roundabout. These commuters will be detoured via Rookwood Avenue.
  • Access to businesses’ carparks will be maintained at all times, although customers should allow extra time to navigate the roadworks.
  • Businesses who have a driveway access within the traffic light controlled one-way system will need to exercise caution when exiting their property.
  • Cyclists will need to merge with traffic through the site.

Local businesses in the area will remain open during this work.

There will be changes to the traffic management during the construction process. These will be communicated closer to the time.

Please follow the signposted detour route and take note of all signage.

Information for residents and businesses

  • Access to properties and businesses for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained around the worksite where possible.
  • We’ll help people get around the site. Please advise our team if you have specific requirements e.g. medical visits, large deliveries, home help or any planned works.
  • At times, we’ll need to remove on-street parking to allow space for the works, and to keep everyone safe.
  • There will be increased construction noise and vibration at times, and we’ll do our best to keep this to a minimum.
  • The work will have no impact on any services such as water, electricity, telecommunications, and gas.
  • The timing of the work and certain activities will depend on the weather and the roads. We’ll provide updates if there are changes to the planned works.
  • Please put your bins out as usual by 6am on your collection day. Our team will move them and return them if needed.

Information for road users

  • Temporary traffic management (road cones, signs) will be installed as part of the works. There may be some traffic delays and changes to traffic management. Please follow all signage and instructions from our team onsite.
  • A 30 km/h speed limit will be in place so we can keep our team and everyone safe.
  • We know this work can be disruptive, and we appreciate your co-operation and understanding.
