Takapūneke Reserve - Ōnuku landfill capping

Update

What

The work to cap the Ōnuku landfill has now been suspended due to the recent rainstorm July 2023 and making the ground conditions too wet to work effectively.
In October 2023 we’ll return to continue remediating the southern face of the landfill cap, by excavating some of the old capping material and replacing it with a locally sourced low permeability clay cap.

Why

The existing landfill cap has eroded and is no longer deemed fit for purpose. A new landfill cap on the southern face is required to protect the landfill.

Where

Ōnuku landfill is located at 293 Beach Road, Akaroa. Site access for the works will be gained from Ōnuku Road in Akaroa.

When

Early October 2023 to late December 2023. Monday to Saturday, 7am to 6pm (weather/site condition dependent).

Contact

The contractor is Taggart Ltd. Phone (03) 323 7085, Monday to Friday, 8am – 5pm.

Details

Work Details

The earthworks will involve striping the existing vegetation located on the southern slopes of the landfill, then benching and cutting the slope in preparation for new capping. New low permeability clay capping will be imported from locally sourced locations within Akaroa.

Upon completion the work area will be top-soiled and grassed.

Hours of work:

  • Monday to Saturday, from 7am to 6pm.
  • Some out of hours work may be required to work around weather constraints.

 Impact of work:

  • The work will be noisy while we complete the earthworks.
  • Some on-street parking will be restricted on Ōnuku Road for safety reasons.
  • A temporary yard will be set up on the Ōnuku landfill site.
  • There will be an increased number of trucks moving through Akaroa Township during the work.
  • We will maintain public access to Takapūneke Reserve and takarangi while the work is being undertaken.
