We're making safety improvements at the intersection of Somerfield and Strickland streets.

The Somerfield Street and Strickland Street intersection is a busy area used by many vehicles, walkers and cyclists. We want everyone to get where they’re going safely, regardless of how they’re travelling, so we’re making safety improvements at this intersection.

The improvements will make the intersection safer by slowing vehicles and improving visibility for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

Starting 28 April 2026, our contractors will be:

  • Adding tactile pavers and speed humps to the crossing on Somerfield Street, at the Strickland Street intersection.
  • Adding a small section of cycle lane on Strickland Street from the Colombo Street intersection to the Somerfield Street intersection.
  • Improving line marking on the existing cycle lanes to identify conflict points.
  • Adding a central median island on Strickland Street.
  • Adding no stopping restrictions on the west side of Strickland Street outside 1/141 to improve visibility.
  • Extending the kerb build-out in front of Moon Under Water and improving pedestrian visibility on that corner.
  • Adding new cycle stands outside Moon Under Water and Commi, and upgrading the existing landscaped area on the corner of Colombo Street and Strickland Street.

The work is expected to take about four weeks.

Traffic impacts

We know road works can be frustrating, so we’ll be working hard to get out of your way as soon as possible.

Two-way traffic will be maintained on Colombo Street, with detours in place for vehicles turning into Somerfield or Strickland Streets from Colombo Street.

Traffic will be able to turn onto Colombo Street from Somerfield and Strickland Streets, although road users will need to take care. A 30 km/h speed limit will apply.

Background

In July 2025 we asked for feedback on proposed safety improvements at this busy intersection.

Following consultation, the Waihoro Spreydon-Cashmere-Heathcote Community Board decided to approve the safety improvements – read more about the decision and consultation on our website.
