We're working alongside Orion to make essential traffic signal upgrades at two intersections on Milton Street.

We're making essential upgrades in the area

We're coordinating with Orion, Waitaha Canterbury's lines company, while they're working on Milton Street(external link).

Orion has been working in the area since late April this year, installing a new underground 66kV power cable that will run between the Milton Substation and the Halswell Substation on Sparks Road. This work is adding strength and resilience to our electricity network.

We identified an opportunity to make essential upgrades at two intersections on Milton Street during this time. We're working alongside the Orion team to make the most of the traffic management in the area, and to reduce disruption to the people who live in or travel through this area.

Milton Street and Selwyn Street intersection

Our work is wrapping up at this intersection.

As well as upgrading the traffic signals, we're introducing pedestrian protection at the intersection – red arrow displays to hold back turning traffic while pedestrians are using the crossings. This will help to improve safety for tamariki-children travelling to and from Christchurch South Karamata Intermediate School.

Milton Street, Barrington Street and Frankleigh Street intersection

From Sunday 29 June to Monday 14 July 2025:

  • Barrington Street south of Milton Street and Frankleigh Street will be closed until Friday 11 July
  • Orion NZ will work during the day to install cable ducts across the intersection and we’ll work overnight, to limit the time we’re disrupting this busy intersection
  • Milton Street will be one-way travelling from Barrington Street to Simeon Street
  • We’re asking road users to follow all detour signage

From Monday 14 July to Monday 28 July 2025:

  • The partial intersection closure will be lifted.
  • Temporary traffic management will remain, but you’ll be able to travel through the intersection from all directions.
