The Christchurch Economic Ambition sets a pathway for Ōtautahi Christchurch towards multi-generational prosperity and well-being. Our Ambition is to grow the economy, in ways that benefit people and the planet.

It is based on us shifting to a regenerative economy – where more carbon is eliminated than produced and there’s a focus on reusing, repairing and repurposing materials, rather than ‘taking, making and disposing’ of them.

ChristchurchNZ developed the Ambition on behalf of the Council, its primary shareholder. The Council endorsed the Ambition in October 2023.

Our Ambition was developed through talking and listening to a wide range of businesses and organisations. It draws on the evidence showing the benefits and importance of changing how our economy operates to address global, national and local challenges such as climate change, and realise opportunities based on our local industry and infrastructure strengths.

It has four long-term goals:

  1. Pou hapāi: Enterprises whose ambition defies size, makes best use of global tools and combines them with local innovation, resources and connections to raise productivity, reduce emissions and waste, and positively impact people and the environment.
  2. Pou rite: Our city balances the needs of people and nature. It is liveable and loveable, boasting acclaimed and accessible central city, creative spaces, distinctive neighbourhoods and assets that catalyse connections, innovation and play. It supports people and businesses by developing and managing our resources in a way that proactively advances climate resilience and net positive transformation.
  3. Pou matua: Our government, industry, cultural and societal leaders have strong relationships and work together to promote and advocate for our city, honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi, champion positive change, and utilise the benefits of our small city and nation to catalyse big ideas and impact.
  4. Pou tāngata: As a city of people who care, we offer jobs with purpose, provide equal opportunities for work and education, seek knowledge, and give people the space and time to take their downtime to new heights.

Realising the Ambition requires collaborative action by Council, partner organisations and the private sector.
