This framework coordinates the roles Council and ChristchurchNZ will play in events and provides a fresh approach to take advantage of new opportunities to ensure that we get the most out of events in our city.

This consultation has now closed

We received ten submissions [PDF, 49 KB] during the consultation period. All responses were considered by members of the Social, Community Development & Housing Committee, and the Strategic Capability Committee at a joint workshop on Monday 06 November, 2017. The outcome of the workshop was to recommend minor changes to the Events Policy Framework as a result of consultation feedback, and to send the updated document to the full Council on 20 December for adoption. Background

This Draft Events Policy Framework replaces the Christchurch City Council Events Strategy 2007-2017. Since 2007 there have been significant changes in the events sector in Christchurch and in 2017 Canterbury Development Corporation, Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism, International Education, the Convention Bureau, and Council Major Events merged to form ChristchurchNZ. Charged with boosting major events in the city, ChristchurchNZ are creating a Major Events Strategy with input from major event stakeholders, to cover major events in the city.

The Draft Events Policy Framework explains why we support events in Christchurch, sets a combined vision for events in the city, and outlines the different categories of events and who is responsible for them. The Events Policy Framework seeks a well-balanced and coordinated calendar of events, to create a more vibrant city year round – for residents and visitors. The Policy covers all types of events, and describes the new arrangements for events between The Council and ChristchurchNZ. The Council will continue to be responsible for community events in Christchurch, and will develop a Community Events Implementation Plan with input from the community. The division of responsibility for events allows each organisation to work to its strengths, while bringing shared benefits to the city.

The Draft Events Policy Framework was planned and drafted by a small cross council working group which included ChristchurchNZ. The first draft was shared with event stakeholders in Christchurch for feedback. That feedback was incorporated into the document before it was presented to the Social and Community Development Committee and Council. We are now inviting wider feedback on the draft policy.

Next steps

In November 2017 the Social and Community Development Committee and Strategic Capability Committee will discuss the public feedback on the Draft Events Policy Framework. The Major Events Strategy (from ChristchurchNZ) will also be discussed at the same joint committee workshop.

Following the workshop the Draft Events Policy Framework will be presented to Council for adoption.
