Tour Christchurch with Kate Sheppard
Hear what life was like for women in Kate Sheppard's day, tour the city by bus to visit Kate Sheppard sites, experience an 1893 suffrage meeting, and more.
The first part of this event takes place at the CWEA building (59 Gloucester Street). The second part is the bus tour which starts and ends at the CWEA.
Tour the city by bus and hear about sites associated with Kate Sheppard. Led by a person dressed as Kate Sheppard, we stop at:
- Kate Sheppard House – we will walk in Kate's beautiful spring garden, after tea on the verandah
- Seddon bell tower – 'King Dick Seddon' entertains us with his views on votes for women
- Addington Cemetery – we lay a flower on Kate’s grave
- Kate Sheppard Memorial – we hear about other leading suffragists, and how the fight for equal rights continues today.
Participants will get a booklet containing background information, a tour map, and pictures.
Please bring your own bag lunch. Tea and coffee are provided.
