Spirited Cemetery Tours – Avonside Parish Cemetery

A series of cemetery tours revealing not only the great and good but also the interesting, scandalous and downright evil.

Join local historian Richard Greenaway on a tour of the Avonside Parish Cemetery and discover the historic graves of geologist and museum founder Julius von Haast, Canterbury Superintendent William Rolleston and his socialite wife Mary Brittan, and architects J. C. Maddison and B. W. Mountfort.

Richard Greenaway (M.A. (Honours in History), University of Canterbury, 1972) has taken cemetery tours during Heritage Week/Festival since 1994.

From 1980 to 2015 he was Reference Librarian, Aotearoa New Zealand Centre, Christchurch City Libraries, and is the author of two books for Christchurch City Libraries:

  • Unsung heroines – published for Women's Suffrage Year, 1993.
  • Rich man, poor man, environmentalist, thief – for the millennium and 150th anniversary of the Canterbury province, in 2000.

Greenaway received the A.C. Rhodes Medal from the Canterbury History Foundation in 2008.

Cemetery tour booklets are available for $5 on the day.
