Follow in Kate Sheppard's tyre tracks to learn more about this fearless social campaigner and enthusiastic cyclist.
This gentle Spring ride will take you around the central city and Addington, then out along the leafy unicycle route to Te Whare Waiutuutu Kate Sheppard House for a guided tour and refreshments. We'll stop at places of interest to hear more about Kate Sheppard's life and work.
The ride will be led by Dr. Rosemary Baird, Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga, with support from Biketober. The route uses segregated cycleways where possible, starting and finishing in Victoria Square.
This event involves a small group bicycle ride around locations relevant to the life and work of Kate Sheppard, culminating in a tour of Te Whare Waiutuutu Kate Sheppard House.
Most New Zealanders will be aware of Kate's role in the successful women's suffrage petition, but she was an energetic leader in social issues well beyond suffrage or even temperance.
Her work is an excellent example of informal education through organising, public speaking, writing and publishing, including via the NZ Women's Christian Temperance Union (founding member), National Council of Women New Zealand (inaugural President), and the White Ribbon newspaper (editor).
Kate was adept at all the social media channels of her time, constantly informing women of their rights and the power of the plight of those less fortunate. She was also an advocate of the bicycle.
Participants must be confident riding a bicycle on bike paths and city streets. You must wear a cycle helmet approved by law. Your bicycle must be in good working order (check your brakes).
