Critical Heritage: The future of colonial architecture

A panel event discussing the complex issues around colonial architecture, and new ways forward to decolonize and re-indigenize colonial spaces.

In recent years international controversies over colonial buildings and statues have made headlines and inspired discussions around decolonization and re-indigenization.

Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga and Te Pūtahi Centre for Architecture and City Making host an exciting and challenging evening as our expert panellists discuss the future of colonial architecture in Aotearoa.

What is the relationship of colonial architecture to Te Tiriti o Waitangi? Can it be decolonized or re-indigenized? Will colonial architecture remain relevant, and how will new generations view it?

The evening includes a bi-cultural tour of Te Whare Waiutuutu Kate Sheppard House, and a hot drink and snack.

Guests – please arrive at 7.15pm if you want to have a hot drink and biscuit before the event starts at 7.30pm.

Panelists

  • Corbin Te Aika (Ngāi Tahu): Te Matatiki Toi Ora Trustee and kaiārahi, University of Canterbury.
  • Christine Whybrew: Director Southern, Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga.
  • Lyndon Fraser: Associate Professor, University of Canterbury.
