An illustrated talk on some of the better and lesser-known artists who flourished in Christchurch during the troubled decades of the twentieth century.
Was Christchurch the centre of Fine Arts culture in New Zealand in the first half of the twentieth century?
This illustrated talk will look at how fine art flourished during the early days of the century in the remote colony of New Zealand. Christchurch in particular produced some of our best-known artists of the period including Sydney Thompson, Rita Angus, Rata Lovell-Smith, Bill Sutton and Rhona Haszard and the Canterbury School of Regional Landscape Painters who painted the local landscape in an impressionistic manner.
This talk will also look at some of the lesser-known artists who have emerged from the Canterbury College School of Art and had long careers as professional artists and art teachers.
