Christchurch is a low-lying city and there have always been areas that are prone to flooding during heavy rainfall, the Canterbury Earthquakes has worsened flooding in many areas of the city through damage to waterways and land.
The Council has been working since 2012 on ways to address city-wide flooding. This work includes the Land Drainage Recovery Programme (LDRP). The individual projects in the LDRP span much of the city and look at area-wide flood mitigation options, including large scale physical works, to reduce the risk of flooding to the city’s most affected areas and to restore land drainage to at least its pre-earthquake condition.
