The right lock makes all the difference. As a rule of thumb, we recommend you spend around 10% of your bike’s value on a good lock.

  • Use a D-lock or hardened-steel chain.
  • Always lock through your bike frame and rear wheel to a solid object, like a proper bike stand.
  • Check the Sold Secure rating (Diamond, Gold, Silver, Bronze) when buying a lock.
  • Avoid flexible spiral cable locks — they’re too easy to cut.

D-lock – Recommended

Made of solid steel.

The strongest option for securing your bike

Best used through the rear wheel and bike frame.

Chain lock

Choose one made of hardened steel links; thicker is better (8mm+).

Flexible and great for awkward parking spots.

Foldable lock

Relatively strong, compact, and portable.

Comes with a handy mount or pouch.

Cable lock – Not recommended

Easily cut.

Only use as a secondary lock for extra parts like wheels.

Prevent your bike being stolen with the best lock

Locky Docks are free to use and add an extra layer of security with reinforced steel docks.

Charge your e-bike while you park (BYO charging cable).

Tap your Metrocard, contactless card, or use the Bikeep app to lock/unlock.

Find Locky Docks at various locations around the city(external link).

How to use a Locky Dock

  • Lock your bike in busy, well-lit places.
  • Take accessories like lights with you.
  • Consider replacing quick-releases on your wheels and seat with anti-theft versions – talk to your local bike store.
  • Even if it’s just a quick stop – lock it properly.
