Consultation has now closed

Consultation on safety improvements for Avonhead Road and Withells Road has now closed. People were able to provide feedback from 15 March to 29 March 2023.

During this time we received submissions from eight individuals and heard from another 13 people informally. You can read their feedback with staff responses to questions [PDF, 303 KB] and also find out how this influenced the decision made(external link) by the Waimāero Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board.

We expect construction to start mid 2023.

Avonhead Road and Withells Road are well used by drivers and pedestrians, especially on game days and weekends. The Waimāero Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board has received concerns about speeds in this area and the safety of pedestrians crossing Avonhead and Withells roads.

To make it safer for everyone we’re looking to install new safety features.

These include:

  • Two pedestrian refuge islands on Avonhead Road and one on Withells Road near the intersection.
  • A kerb build-out on the eastern corner of the intersection to decrease the crossing distance for pedestrians using the new pedestrian refuge island.
  • A painted flush median along Avonhead Road.
