Inspired by the 1974 Commonwealth Games marathon, the Frontrunner Christchurch Marathon has been South Island’s premier marathon event since 1981.

It is renowned as one of the flattest and fastest courses in the world, but it is also one of the most scenic and supportive.  The central city course takes in iconic Christchurch landmarks such as the Town Hall, Hagley Park, and the Avon River.

The central city is open for business, please plan your travel on the day and be aware that there may be some delays. Traffic and transport restrictions will be in place from 5am to 1.30pm.

If you’re coming into the city centre to take part in the marathon or to cheer people on, please be aware there will be some road closures and detours in place to prevent vehicles from crossing the marathon route.

The Lichfield Street, Hereford Street and The Crossing parking buildings will all be open. Both the Art Gallery and West End carparks will have access from 1:30pm.

Because of the traffic management in place, it will be best to travel in and around the central city using the four avenues. Those wanting to access the central city should approach/depart from the south or east.

  • Please avoid crossing Kilmore St as there will be road closures on north/south routes that cross Kilmore St
  • Bus services will continue as normal but may experience some delays
  • Expect delays on key routes through and around the central city
  • If you are coming from the northeast of the city and need access to Christchurch Hospital your best route is via Fitzgerald Ave and St Asaph St
  • If you are coming from the north or west of the city and need access to Christchurch Hospital your best route is via Deans Ave and Riccarton Ave
  • Walk and cycle if possible to, from and within the central city.
