The Walking Festival will be back next year in 2024!

Whether you’re a fan of local history, getting out into nature, socialising or pushing yourself to get that awesome view, there’s something for all ages and abilities. With over 55 walks across Ōtautahi, Selwyn and Waimakariri, you'll be spoilt for choice.

While you wait, explore Ōtautahi, Selwyn and Waimakariri all year round via self-guided walks. To find a walk nearby or explore a new district, check out the local trails in the area:

The Walking Festival is coordinated by the Christchurch City Council in partnership with over 30 walking host groups.

Recreation Aotearoa Awards 2021

The Walking Festival received a Merit Award for Best Event at the Recreation Aotearoa Awards in 2021.

The Recreation Awards recognise excellence, innovation, and effectiveness of outstanding activity within the recreation sector as well as the achievement and service of individuals whose commitment and contribution promote the ongoing development and enhancement of the industry.

Have you considered getting involved with a walking group or maybe even setting up your own? Meeting up with others can help you feel more motivated. If you're interested in starting your own group, visit Active Canterbury (external link)for tips and free resources.

There are heaps of walking groups in Canterbury. Pop into the local library or service centre to pick up a Christchurch Walking Groups booklet.

  • Whānau: Our stakeholders and partners are supported to provide recreational opportunities.
  • Te Ara: Provide pathways for people to continue to walk regularly.
