Details

  • We’re upgrading the final section of High Street between Tuam and St Asaph Streets. This will include a new road surface, wider footpaths to allow for outdoor dining, upgraded street lighting, new landscaping and a northbound cycle connection that links the central city's cycle network with Puari ki Kahukura Heathcote Expressway.  We're also renewing drainage, and the work will involve removing existing tram tracks and foundations which are buried in the road.
  • We’re holding an informal drop-in session on Friday 26 January from 11am–3pm at Ara Institute, JZ Building, which has an entrance off High Street. This is your opportunity to learn more about the project and share any queries or concerns you may have with the team.
  • Work will start 7 February on the eastern side of the road (outside Ara Institute) with new drainage and footpath works, before moving to the western side and then onto the carriageway. Connetics will also install new street lighting at the same time as the roading works.

Traffic Impacts

  • We’ll put in place a number of traffic management layouts while we complete the work. These will be a mix of road closures, one-ways, shoulder closures, lane drops and the temporary removal of parking.
  • The first few stages of work will require a one-way traffic management system. We’ll install it on Wednesday, 7 February and traffic will travel southbound on High Street between Tuam and St Asaph Streets. Please keep an eye out for traffic management changes, and we’ll update you as the project progresses.
  • We’re maintaining business and pedestrian access at all times. However, we’ll need to remove on-street parking to allow space for the works, and to keep everyone safe.
  • Please follow the detour signs. A 30kph speed limit will be in place so everyone stays safe. There will be footpath access around the work site. The contractor’s on-site staff can help with any queries.

  • The bulk of this work will happen during the day. However, there may be times when the contractor will carry out specific tasks at night when the roads are quieter. The contractor will give 48 hours’ notice to affected properties before they carry out any night works.
  • There may be times when vehicle access to your property is restricted. This will be temporary, and our contractor will knock on your door beforehand so you can move your vehicles if needed.
  • There will be construction noise and we’ll do our best to keep this to a minimum. There may also be some traffic delays and areas cordoned off as we complete the works. We’ll work with businesses and residents along the street to find convenient times to work.
  • The timing of the work and certain activities is dependent on the weather and the roads, and we’ll provide regular updates throughout construction.
  • We’re sorry for the disruption and thank you for your patience.
