We’re making our streets more people-friendly and easier and safer for everyone to walk, scooter, drive or bike.

Whether visiting whānau and friends or letting tamariki walk, scooter or bike to school, everyone should be able to do it safely.

We’ve received Government funding through the Streets for People programme to help make streets in Aranui surrounding the Haeata Community Campus more people-friendly, safe and easy to use for everyone.

We’ve used this funding to co-design temporary street upgrades in Aranui with the local community(external link), using ideas from school students, community leaders and the wider public.

Now that the construction of these approved temporary changes is complete, we're inviting feedback on our Kōrero mai | Let's talk(external link) website, where you can also learn more about the project.

The changes have been made using low-cost, quick-to-install materials to trial how they work before considering permanent changes in future. Trialling street changes provides an opportunity for people to reimagine their streets, allows the trial to adapt based on feedback, and ensures any permanent solution meets the needs of the community.

About Streets for People

Streets for People aims to put people at the heart of our streets, co-designing with communities safer and more accessible environments for walking and cycling, with road treatments that help to reduce vehicle speeds and volumes in places where pedestrian numbers are high.

We want to make it easier and faster to create safer, healthier and more people-friendly streets. The projects often use playful interventions to encourage people to rethink how they see and use their streets, contributing to the larger goal of creating safe, liveable streets for everyone.

The funding allows us to deliver adaptive approaches to street changes, enhanced collaborative engagement, and resources and materials for piloting designs to open streets up for people.
