Akaroa sea walls – repairs and protection work

What

We are repairing aged and damaged sea walls and placement of additional rock protection.

Why

We maintain our sea walls across the city to make sure they are safe and work effectively.

Where

Two sea wall sections 1) adjacent to #51 - #79 Beach Road & 2) the Akaroa Recreation Grounds from the boat ramp to the boat park.

When

Late-October 2021 to mid-December 2021. Monday to Saturday, 7am to 6pm(weather/site condition dependent).
Note: Some out of hours work may be required to work around tidal constraints.

Details 

We are undertaking maintenance and repairs to the sea protection walls that support the road corridor and work will be undertaken on both sites.

The work includes, grouting of existing wall, rock placement, storm-water outfall reconstruction, landscape planting (April 22), filling in voids behind the sea walls, and footpath repairs.

Impact of work:

  • Public access to boat ramp will be maintained for the duration of the works.
  • There will be noise disturbance, particularly during the demolition & reconstruction phases.
  • Some on-street parking in the Akaroa recreation reserve and Beach Road will be restricted for safety reasons.
  • Beach Road footpath (beach side) will be closed for the duration of the works.
  • The recreation reserve area (harbour edge) will be unavailable for pedestrian access during the duration of the works.
  • Beach / foreshore access, directly below the immediate work zone, will be restricted during low tides.
  • There will be an increased number of trucks moving through Akaroa township during the duration of the works.
