What

When

10 July 2022 to December 2022. Sunday to Friday, 7:30pm to 6am (weather/site condition dependent).

What’s happening?

We’re making more sections of Dyers Pass Road safer.

Work will start on Sunday 10 July to widen sections of Dyers Pass Road and install safety barriers at several more high-risk locations.

We know this work was disruptive last time. We’ve listened to your feedback and made changes to improve traffic flow while we’re working.

As well as working during the day, we’re working overnight using larger equipment, which can only operate when the road is closed to traffic. This will help to speed up progress and reduce disruption during the day when the road is busier.

What is the impact?

Dyers Pass Road will be closed each night from Sunday to Friday between 7.30pm and 6am.

Night work will start on Sunday 10 July. Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency are completing deluge testing in the Lyttelton Tunnel, which will be closed between midnight and 5am on 12 – 14 July 2022 (Tuesday – Thursday). Dyers Pass Road will remain open when the Lyttelton Tunnel is closed, and stop/go traffic control will be in place at these times to let traffic through the work area. Following that work, Dyers Pass Road will close overnight.

Road users will need to use the Lyttelton tunnel or Gebbies Pass.

Work is expected to be completed in December 2022.

When we’re working during the day Dyers Pass Road will be reduced to one lane with temporary traffic lights. Delays of 20 minutes plus travel time are to be expected. Day works are expected to begin around Monday 18 July, depending on how night works progress (see overleaf to find out how you can stay updated during the work).

Our contractor will be doing their best to minimise disruption, and will have only two sites operating at once to reduce the amount of traffic lights and wait times. If you can, we encourage people to use the Lyttelton tunnel or Gebbies Pass. Otherwise motorists should factor in an extra 20 minutes into their travel times.

Electronic travel time boards will be installed at key locations to help people decide which route to take.

During the project you will still be able to visit the cafés and businesses on and around Dyers Pass Road as usual during their normal business hours. During the overnight closures you will need to access businesses on the opposite side of Dyers Pass Road using the Lyttelton tunnel or Gebbies Pass.
