We’re making it safer, easier and more attractive to catch the bus at The Palms by moving the bus stop, building a better bus shelter and creating a new waiting area.

Artists impression of The Palms bus hub

The New Brighton Road bus stop will be moved towards the Marshlands Road intersection to create a more attractive space for the 250 bus passengers that use the bus stop each day.

The current bus stop is on the south side of The Palms shopping complex with poor visibility and exposure to the weather, while the new stop will be sunnier, more easily accessible and protected from the weather.

The work includes:

  • a better bus shelter
  • indented bus bays
  • improved lighting
  • new bike racks at the bus stop
  • replacing the existing magnolia trees with new magnolias and landscaping
  • new kerb and foot path where the existing bus stop is to be removed

We’re working closely with The Palms to minimise disruption while we build the new bus stop. We’ll be using part of The Palms car park as a construction area and there will be a short detour for pedestrians while we do the work. Bus users will be able to use the existing bus stop while we work on the new one.

The Palms is a busy bus hub and this work is part of a lot of planned public transport investment across the city. We’ve recently upgraded the Eastgate bus hub, bus lanes will be built on Lincoln Road starting next year and there is more investment planned as part of the Greater Christchurch Public Transport Business Case.
