Repair, strengthening and refurbishment work is planned for the building at 18 Canterbury Street (on the corner of London and Canterbury streets). This refurbished Library will also contain a customer service desk.

Changes to the exterior include repainting, a new entranceway and minor other upgrades.  Internally a new layout will include a flexible space, bookable meeting rooms and improved magazine, children's and youth areas.

The Council is integrating the Service Centre into the Library facility in line with community feedback received as part of the Council's Suburban Masterplan for Lyttelton.

The Library will close in February 2016 for the refurbishment and will re-open at the end of 2016. While the Library is closed, the Council will continue to provide library services to Lyttleton from temporary locations including:

  • visits from the mobile library
  • a book vending machine
  • a returns bin
  • Babytime and Storytime programmes
  • after school programmes including Science Alive.

More detailed information on the temporary Library services will be available closer to the time.
