As Phase Two of the Ferry Road / Main Road corridor, the Main Road Master Plan supports the recovery between Ferrymead Bridge and Marriner Street, Sumner.

The Main Road corridor along the Ihutai / Avon–Heathcote Estuary and coastal margin between Ferrymead and Sumner suffered significant damage to infrastructure, community facilities and residential properties as a result of the 2010–11 Canterbury Earthquakes.
The vision is that the Main Road corridor is the thread that connects, and provides a common bond between, the discrete and distinct local communities of Christchurch’s eastern bays.
The implementation actions focus on the following areas:
Since the Master Plan was adopted, work has begun on the implementation of Council-led actions. Funding has been secured for streetscape and movement improvements in the Village. There will be further engagement with the local community and affected businesses over these improvements, once detailed design work is completed.
|March to April 2013||Project set-up||Technical and other information was gathered, including an assessment of the impact of the September 2010 and February 2011 earthquakes, and identification of the key stakeholders.|
|May to June 2013||Research and information gathering||
A series of focus group sessions and community workshops involving business and property owners and the local community took place to propose, discuss and identify the community’s values, needs, aspirations and priorities for the redevelopment of the two commercial areas and the Main Road corridor.
|June 2013||Design and feasibility testing||An ‘Inquiry by Design’ workshop was held to combine and reconcile the community’s values, needs, aspirations and priorities with the knowledge of technical experts from a range of government and community organisations and groups to ensure the Main Road Master Plan is both realistic and achievable.|
|June to July 2013||Prepare draft Master Plan||Discussions/liaison continued with stakeholders as preparation of the draft plan was undertaken.|

Christchurch City Council approved the Draft Main Road Master Plan for public comment.
|October to November 2013||Consultation||
The Draft Main Road Master Plan was open for public comment between 21 October and 22 November 2013. Three drop-in sessions were held with more than 130 attending. People could talk to Council staff, view the full and summary documents and make submissions.
The Council adopted a recommendation made by the Hagley/Ferrymead Community Board to hold hearings. Of the 216 written submissions received on the draft Master Plan, 72 per cent support its overall direction.
|June 2014||Follow-up investigations||
People who made submissions to a draft rebuild and recovery plan for the Main Road corridor from Ferrymead Bridge to Marriner Street in Sumner presented their views to the Hearings Panel. 19 people supporting their written submission in person.
|July to November 2014||Revisions to draft||Follow-up investigations were undertaken and amendments made to draft plan as recommended by the Hearings Panel.|
|November 2014||Adoption by Council||Council adopts the Main Road Master Plan.|
The Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team (SCIRT) and Christchurch City Council consulted on parking along Main Road in Redcliffs.
