People walking their dogs on the Port Hills or on local beaches are being reminded to keep them on a leash to protect vulnerable newborn lambs and seal pups.

“Many of the reserves on the Port Hills are used by farmers to graze sheep and with lambing season under way, there are lots of newborn lambs around,’’ says Christchurch City Council Animal Management Team Leader Mark Vincent.

Lambing season is under way on the Port Hills.

“If you’re walking on the Port Hills it is important you keep your dog on a leash, at all times, as there have been cases in the past where dogs have chased or mauled newborn lambs.

“The Council doesn’t close the walking tracks during the lambing season but we do ask people to be mindful of stock welfare. Try and keep your distance from stock and make sure you leave gates as you find them,’’ Mr Vincent says.

With seal pups also starting to appear on some beaches, dog owners are also being asked to not to let their dogs run around uncontrolled.

There has already been at least one reported dog attack on a seal this spring.

“Until mid-November, seal pups will be weaned and rest on regional beaches. They have few defences but if left alone, they will make their way back to the ocean. Please keep your dog leashed on beaches where seals may be present and stay at least 20 metres away if you see one,’’ Mr Vincent says.
