Christchurch City Council staff will work with police and public health officials to gather evidence to identify the issues that could be addressed by a Local Alcohol Policy (LAP).

Since 2012 the Council has had the ability under the Sale and Supply of Liquor Act to use a LAP to set tighter rules around where and when alcohol can be sold within the city.

Late last year the Council decided not to proceed with the Provisional LAP it had been working on for several years as so much had changed in the city since it was first initiated.

Today, the Council considered a report from the Regulatory and Performance Committee which recommended asking staff to begin work as soon as possible on drafting a new LAP.

However, the Council decided that rather than progress with the development of the LAP, staff should work with other agencies to gather evidence to present to the new Council elected next year.  Any policy considerations should be supported by evidence to prove they will address a local problem.
