Halswell Quarry has been awarded the South Island’s first Green Flag Award.

Christchurch City Council Operations Manager, Regional Parks, Kay Holder says the awarding of the international mark of a quality park or green space “highlights the special attributes of our very accessible Halswell Quarry as we continue to develop stunning spaces for the community”.

By unfurling the flag in Christchurch for the first time, the New Zealand Recreation Association, which oversees the award locally, has recognised Halswell Quarry’s high-quality horticultural standards, cleanliness and sustainability, along with community involvement.

Launched in 1996 in Britain to recognise and reward well-managed parks and green spaces, the Green Flag scheme now operates in Europe, the United Arab Emirates, Australia and New Zealand.

“It’s certainly no ‘walk in the park’ to win the award,” Ms Holder says.

“Years of hard work and a strong commitment by the community and Council staff to developing Halswell Quarry have finally paid off with the prestigious award.

“Our public parks are integral to individual well-being and a thriving community and the Green Flag certainly sets the benchmark in acknowledging exceptional spaces.”
