A family-friendly 'house-warming party’ on Friday will mark the official opening of Christchurch’s newest gathering space – Evolution Square.

Located on Tuam Street, between Little High Eatery and EPIC, Evolution Square is the third of four South Frame gathering spaces to be completed by Crown company Ōtākaro Limited.

Vanguard Square opened in late 2016 and Mataī Common opened in June this year.

Construction of the fourth and final gathering space - Kahikatea Common – began in October 2017 and will be completed by July 2018.

“Evolution Square is like a central city living room. A place to sit, relax, enjoy the sun and meet with others,’’ says Ōtākaro Limited Chief Executive Albert Brantley.

“As with all gathering spaces in the South Frame, Evolution Square will also be available for events such as markets, food stalls and outdoor dining.’’

Paving, gardens and seating - mostly in the form of hot pink and grey bleachers – give Evolution Square a distinctive feel, while a group of upstanding wooden piles recovered from the Lyttelton Port are a nod to the area’s industrial past.

Little High Eatery Manager Kate Grater says Evolution Square’s neighbours have been busy preparing for the 'house-warming’ event that will mark the Square’s official opening.

“With the gardens and the hot pink bleachers, Evolution Square adds to the vibrancy of the area and we’re eager to make the most of it,’’ Mrs Grater says.

“The opening party will be a family-friendly event with free live music, great food, fortune cookies and a special virtual reality experience. Santa selfies will also be a feature of the night.’’

The Evolution Square house-warming party is on from 4.30pm to 10pm this Friday.
