If the prospect of another wet weekend is giving you cabin fever, check out one of the following events.

Film festival

It's the final weekend of the New Zealand International Film Festival (NIZFF)so make the most of your last chance to see some award-winning features, documentaries and shorts. The NZIFF is on  at the Isaac Theatre Royal and Hoyts Northlands and has featured 90 films from more than 20 countries, including handpicked selections fresh from highly acclaimed awards circuits such as Cannes, Berlin and Sundance.

And if you thought NZIFF was just for adults, think again.  It features some  imaginative and engaging animated short films aimed at both the very youngest of filmgoers and animation admiring grown-ups.  Check them out with the kids.

Belfast in the Park

Fingers crossed the weather will clear for Belfast in the Park on Sunday.  The event is being held in Sheldon Park from 11.30am to 2.30pm and there will be lots of free, fun activities for the kids. Food trucks including Tommy Taco and Smokey T's BBQ will be at the park so you won't go hungry.

Sand mandala

Pop along to Te Hāpua: Halswell Centre between 10am and 4pm this weekend and check out progress on the sand mandala being created by Tibetan monks. Since last weekend they have been patiently constructing a sacred cosmogram grain by grain with crushed marble coloured sand, representing a world in perfect harmony. Once it is complete, it will be ceremoniously destroyed on September 2 as a reminder of the impermanence of all things.

Matuku Takotako:Sumner Centre opening

The grand opening of the Matuku Takotako:Sumner Centre is on this Saturday at 1.30pm. The new centre on the corner of Wakefield Ave and Nayland St has been built to house Sumner’s library, community centre and museum. The library will be open for business from 3pm on Saturday.
