Canterbury Museum’s special new exhibition Perseverance: Japanese Tattoo Tradition in a Modern World opens on Saturday.  

The exhibition explores the artistry and rich history of traditional Japanese tattooing and its influences on modern practices.

Featuring photographs by award-winning photographer and film maker Kip Fulbeck, the exhibition has been curated by master tattoo artist and author Takahiro Kitamura and showcases the work of seven internationally-acclaimed Japanese American tattoo artists.  

The exhibition is on at the Museum until August 13.

Vintage market

Love all things vintage? Then make your way to the Revamp Vintage Winter Market, which is being held this Sunday at Christchurch Girls’ High School gymnasium between 10am and 3pm. The market brings together Christchurch’s best vintage stall-holders for a fabulous day of vintage shopping. If you are on the look out for antiques, china, silver, upcycled furniture, collectables or clothing make sure you head along. Entry to the market is free.

Volunteer planting day

If you fancy spending some time outside over the weekend then join the Charlesworth Reserve Community Planting Day and Gala. Charlesworth Reserve is an important habitat for native wetland birds and is being restored to protect a tidal wetland and the surrounding coastal shrubland and forest. This year Christchurch City Council rangers, Trees for Canterbury and the Ihutai Trust  hope to add 1800 plants to the reserve.  Volunteers are sought to help with the planting on Sunday between 10am and midday. Tools will be provided but make sure you have sturdy footwear, gloves and warm clothing if the weather is cold. Another planting day will be held at Halswell Quarry Park on Saturday from 10am until 12pm.

The Burmese Cat Club of NZ are holding their annual Cat Show on Saturday at the Te Hāpua Halsell Centre in Halswell Rd. All sorts of breeds of shorthair cats will be on show including Burmese, Siamese, British Blue, Russian Blue and Devon Rex. Come along and see the cats and watch them being judged. The show is open from 10am to 3pm and admission is by $2 gold coin donation.

Filipino flea market

Christchurch’s Filipino community is running a flea market at Abberley Park in St Albans on Saturday between 11am and 4pm. The market will showcase Filipino food and products from the Philippines.
