Not sure how you're going to spend your four day weekend? Here's a list of events that could help to make this Easter one to remember.

  • Marvel at what can be built from meccano and have a go yourself at the Meccano Exhibition in the Great Hall of the Arts Centre. The exhibition is being hosted by the Christchurch Meccano Club and will feature displays by international and national meccano modellers.  There will also be hands-on models for people to try out. The exhibition is on from 10am to 5pm Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Entry is $6 adults, $3 chilldren or $15 for a family pass.
  • What sort of animals lay eggs? Do they all have feathers? What is a Buller's Mollymawk? Find out the answers to these questions and more by doing Canterbury Museum's Easter Egg Hunt. Explore the Museum's galleries where you'll discover birds and beasts of all kinds to help you in your quest for the answers. Pick up an entry form from the foyer and look for the eggs marked with a red arrow. Match them to an animal on your entry form. If you correctly identify the animal whose egg you have not found, you will go into the draw for a great prize. Canterbury Museum is open from 9am to 5pm daily over Easter.
  • Saturday is World Circus Day and to mark the occasion  the Christchurch Circus Trust is having an open day. The trust, based at the Roy Stokes Hall in Seaview Rd, New Brighton, runs circus classes for children and adults.  Pop along during the open day (1 to 3pm) and see whether you've got what it takes to be a circus performer.
  • A Spiritual and Wellbeing Expo is being held at 50 Hoon Hay Rd on Saturday. There will be a great mix of stall-holders offering a wide range of wellbeing and spiritual products and services. The expo is on from 11am to 4pm and there will be free workshops you can participate in from midday.
  • The Ray White New Brighton Easter Carnival is on Saturday from 10am to 1pm in Rawhiti Domain. Aimed at children aged between three and 13, the carnival will feature a guest appearance by the Easter Bunny, an easter egg hunt, free pony rides, a bouncy castle, face-painting, live music and a sausage sizzle. For the adults there will be food and coffee available for purchase.
  • Treat the kids to a train ride this Easter.  The Canterbury Society of Model and Experimental Engineers will have their miniature trains running on Easter Sunday at the Halswell Domain. In addition to their regular Sunday afternoon session from 1 to 4pm, there will be a special night run of the trains between 7 and 9pm, weather permitting.
  • On Sunday Christchurch's Thai community are hosting a Songkran Thai New Year Festival at the Thai Buddhist Temple, 359 Marshland Rd. There will be all sorts of mouth-watering Thai food on offer and demonstrations of modern and classical Thai dancing.
