Councillor and Community Board candidates for Papanui Ward.

Papanui Ward - Councillor (1 required)

Mike DAVIDSON

Mike DavidsonIndependent

My principal place of residence is in the Papanui Ward area.

As your City Councillor I have been a strong supporter of local communities and businesses. I have advocated for safer roads and better transport options that are accessible for everyone, and have consistently pushed for rates restraint.
Locally, I championed the reinstatement of Papanui Bush, a community hub for the Redwood and Northcote communities, the retention of postal and bill services in Papanui and have stood up for the St Albans community impacted by the northern motorway.
Like you, I want our drinking water to be chlorine free, our natural environment healthier and our communities listened to. I will continue to prioritise this and the repair of our broken infrastructure - roads, stormwater, wastewater and water supply.
I bring experience, energy and a strong independent voice to the Council table and your support will ensure that our community continues to have stable, progressive and responsible leadership.

Nathan MCCLUSKEY

Nathan MCCLUSKEYThe People’s Choice - Labour

My principal place of residence is in the Papanui Ward area. I am also standing for the Papanui Ward of the Papanui-Innes Community Board.

Hi, I'm Nathan McCluskey. My wife and I have 6 boys (including biological, adopted and fostered) and I am the Managing Director of my own research consultancy business.
I'm concerned about transport issues in the ward, such as the effects of the Northern Corridor, fit-for-purpose traffic management and bus routes that aren't meeting resident's needs. I am passionate about keeping Christchurch's assets in public ownership, rebuilding social housing to pre-earthquake levels and empowering local communities through open and transparent communication and engagement. Having completed my PhD research on election promise-keeping, I feel very strongly about elected representatives being honest about what they stand for.
I was born at Bethany Hospital on Paparoa Street in Papanui, grew up in Northcote attending the local school and went to Casebrook Intermediate. My boys have attended Redwood School and play softball for the Tigers.
If you want local, from dawn to dusky, vote McCluskey!

Peter MCDOUGALL

My principal place of residence is not in the Papanui Ward area. I am also standing for the Papanui Ward of the Papanui-Innes Community Board.

Christchurch can have and do more - but to afford it, a major rethink of how our City Council operates is required to cut back the unsustainable rate increase and projected debt blowout being proposed.
As a management accountant and associate member of Governance NZ, I bring over 20 years' experience working in both local and central government. Living just outside the ward, Papanui is my family's local community and I have the local understanding and knowledge to represent Papanui on Council.
Christchurch can reduce both debt levels and reduce rates by having councillors and staff working closer together, re-focusing on delivering core services more economically addressing the assets that are losing us money and increasing our debt, and no longer having the Council lend money to businesses who cannot get financing from banks.
We can have better services and infrastructure, but I need your vote to do it.

John STRINGER

John STRINGERIndependent

My principal place of residence is in the Papanui Ward area.

Lifelong resident John Stringer polled most total votes in Papanui in 2016, and was elected to the community board; a strong independent advocate already active in the community: Papanui-Innes Community Board, Papanui Rotary, Papanui RSA, Papanui, Heritage Group, Neighbourly forum leader, Papanui, St Paul's Papanui, Northcity church, Papanui Club, Papanui Business Community Networking Group.
Instrumental in having Papanui Bush established as a native totara/kahikatea forest in 2018, John is an advocate for its 1850 restoration and wants native birds to return to Papanui.
Rates are too high! A 15% increase over 3 years is a breach of the social contract with ratepayers. We've spent our children's rates, now we're dipping into our grandchildren's rates!
I opposed water chlorination. I want less spending on cycle lanes; and would have voted no to the new CEO salary. It's too high and a chief exec. from Canterbury would be better.

Merav BENAIA

Merav BENAIAThe People's Choice - Labour

My principal place of residence is in the Papanui Ward of the Papanui-Innes Community Board area.

Never doubt a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.
I believe the key to being a successful representative is open and ongoing communication - to engage and to listen. I believe diversity in age, gender and ethnicity, involvement and participation are key for a thriving local democracy.
As a business woman, my life experience, common sense, ability to be decisive when needed and compromising where required give me the skills to be this person. I want us to have public transport options, safe walking and cycling routes, thriving community facilities and a healthy environment to leave for future generations.
Papanui is a great place to live in and involvement in my local community allowed me to appreciate the potential Papanui has in becoming even better. I will use this experience to listen, take action and make things happen.

Papanui is a great area to live and raise a family, but we need stronger voices on our community board to better manage traffic congestion, ensure services like the Graham Condon Centre are accessible, and to work on keeping our local parks and reserves open, tidy and usable.
We can have better services and infrastructure, but I need your vote to do it.

Emma NORRISH

Emma NORRISHIndependent

My principal place of residence is in the Papanui Ward of the Papanui-Innes Community Board area.

I am seeking a third term as a fully committed, knowledgeable and independent advocate for our community. I understand that the key to being a successful elected representative is communicating openly and honestly with you.
Growing up and now raising a family here gives me passion to see the best brought out in our community. I have worked hard over the past six years on improving council engagement with you throughout decision-making. I will continue to focus on this, while working to get the best out of council for our local community facilities, streets and parks.
My involvement with a wide range of local groups, and on the Redwood School board of trustees, gives me an insight into our community's potential. This reinforces my desire to continue putting my skills to work to ensure our Papanui ward is a safe and inspiring place to live, work and raise families.
