Councillor and Community Board candidates for Coastal Ward.

Coastal Ward - Councillor (1 required)

Kelly BARBER

Kelly BARBERThe People's Choice - Labour

My principal place of residence is not in the Coastal Ward area. I am also standing for the Coastal Ward of the Coastal-Burwood Community Board.

My family and I have spent 30 years living in the East. I love the place, its people and all it has to offer. Our council needs new people, new ideas and new life.
I'm standing because I want our roads fixed, businesses thrive and to bring more vibrant events to our community. In the community I currently serve as chairman of a high school football club, a coach and mentor. I serve at church and helped start the Burwood East Residents Association.
This has taught me how to approach community issues and my 35 years in sales has taught me how to listen and work with people to get things done. As a 15 time Coast to Coast athlete and author of two published books I know the value of hard work, perseverance and determination. Let me put this to work for you as your new city councillor.

My principal place of residence is in the Coastal Ward area.

I grew up here and will grow old here; this part of Christchurch should be better.
Our community has been neglected and disrespected, in particular since the earthquakes, so it's time for local, vocal, energetic and engaging representation. I have discussed the issues with many people and can render them down to three main areas: Repairs, Rates and Relationships. Repairs have not been carried out to an acceptable standard of timing and quality.
Rates are forecast to rise by 50% in the next ten years. The annual budgets must be closely scrutinised. Every dollar matters.
Relationships have been fractured over time, often due to fatigue and frustrations. I will build a positive connection with other councillors, council staff and entities. A fresh face will allow a reset that we, as a community both need and deserve.

The Brighton Beaches have been my home for 50 years. My place and your place deserves to be loved and I am determined to get a lot more love for it. Like all residents here, I have a vision, a vision for the future, and I want to ensure the momentum which has been started by the past Boards, continues without compromise.
I bring a stable presence, a strong voice, I am socially active within our community, belonging to groups and volunteering to others. To repair what has been damaged, to ensure sustainability as Coastal suburbs, to future-proof our existence and our legacies, to see economic growth and success, to gain the wisdom for our needs in the future...all this can only be done with the support of the community - but I will be here to help us get there. Let me work for you.

My principal place of residence is in the Coastal Ward of the Coastal-Burwood Community Board area.

I have raised my 3 sons and grandson in New Brighton and we all love the coastal lifestyle. I have worked as a Business Manager for four local organisations, as an Earthquake Support Co-ordinator in East Chch, and held various governance roles for over 30 years. I now run a Group Facilitation business. This background enables me to be a strong advocate for our Coastal Ward.
The standout feature of our Ward is our large recreation reserves and waterways. This feature can be the basis of health and recreation for our locals, and more customers for our businesses. I will promote improved public facilities, cleaner river water and excellent cycle/walk/wheelchair tracks. I also have the communication skills, networks and practical approach to take care of the daily issues that come before the Board.

Do you believe the East is receiving a fair deal? As a successful local business owner in the heart of New Brighton and a passionate advocate in the community, I have real conversations with real people; I'm connected and approachable.
I am running for the community board because I believe I can represent the communities' voice to achieve our vision and the betterment of our coastal zone sooner.
We live in one of the most stunning locations in the world and I'm passionate about this being recognised. Our potential should not be underestimated.
I provide a realistic, community and business minded approach to decisions with a focus on real progress. I have a proven ability to listen, see potential and find solutions. It would be a privilege to support the process of moving forward for the betterment of our community. I'm in it with you and for you.

I have lived and worked in the New Brighton area my entire life and being a daughter of an ex councillor, I have learnt a lot about how to do what's right for our community.
I currently work several part time jobs, own a business, am happily married and have 2 young adult sons. My hobbies all include water, Aquafit, Surf Life Saving and Wave skiing.
I was heavily involved with the Keep QEII in the East group and the petition regarding the state of Pages Road.
I cannot believe that 9 years after the quakes the east still has so many unresolved issues. The roading, paths, flooding, unkempt river banks and of course the Southshore estuary issue is a major. The future of the red zones concerns me.
I love the coast and our natural playgrounds, and as a board member would be there to help represent your views.
