Background

In 2017, Little River Wairewa Community Trust engaged with the Little River community with their ‘Little River, Big Ideas’ consultation(external link). As a result of this engagement, residents indicated that a dog exercise park would be a great asset to the local community and the wider community who commute through and visit Little River.

Little River Wairewa Community Trust approached Council to undertake a trial on Council land next to the new playground.

What we’re doing

We’re trialling a dog exercise area that contains separate areas for large and small dogs. This will be trialled until 5 May 2023. During this time, we will be collecting feedback on the location, use, and ideas for future development.  We will regularly review the feedback throughout the trial while working closely with the Little River Wairewa Community Trust.

Due to the nature of the area, this trial will have a requirement for dogs to be under effective control while they are playing, this is required for the trial to be successful. Having your dog under effective control means you can see it or are aware of what it is doing and are close enough to prevent issues or quickly bring it to heel.

What do we want from you?

We want to hear your feedback, whether you like or dislike the area, if you think anything could be improved or if there’s something you’d love to see. This will be reviewed by our team and investigated to look at how we could implement your ideas in future plans.

We hope you’re looking forward to the Little River dog exercise trial area.
