Have your say on proposed safety improvements and let's work together to create a safer Hornby community for everyone
We’re making Waterloo Road way safer for the school communities and future Hornby Centre visitors.
We're proposing to install parking restrictions outside Hornby Primary and Hornby High schools to help with the flow of drop-off and pick-up traffic during school hours as well as repurposing these spaces as bus stops between 10am and 2pm, Monday to Friday.
We're making this area more cyclist friendly by constructing a 3-metre wide shared path on both sides of Waterloo Road for students to get to and from school and providing safe access to the future Hornby Centre.
Students from Hornby High School approached Waipuna Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board with concerns surrounding the safety of their peers crossing Waterloo Road. They shared there was a high volume of traffic on this road, including heavy vehicles, and vehicles travelling at speed.
After assessing Waterloo Road, it was concluded that the safety of the area could be greatly improved, most especially for students at Hornby High School and young children at the primary and pre-school.
It was determined that the existing infrastructure was not fit for purpose for large school groups and that with the growing interest in alternative travel modes to and from the schools, the plan was developed to make the road environment way safer.
