The previous St Albans Community Centre was demolished after sustaining severe damage in the Canterbury Earthquakes, and a transitional community centre has been operating at the Colombo Street site since 2012.

This temporary facility was intended to be operational for two to five years until construction of a permanent replacement could get underway.

The final concept went to to the Shirley–Papanui Community Board for approval in July 2016.

Detailed design for the facility has been completed, and the project is currently working through the resource consent process in 2018.
