A staff report (external link)recommending the approval of the non-comprehensive review of the South New Brighton Reserves Management Plan is going to the Coastal Burwood Community Board meeting on Monday 28 June 2021. Meeting minutes will be available on our website approximately three working days following the meeting.

We need to amend the South Brighton Reserves Management Plan and the South Brighton Park Development Plan in order to implement the Council’s November 2020 decision to approve a cobble beach (with existing reno mattress as its core) as the preferred method of restoring the estuary edge.

Currently a cobble beach would not be consistent with the Plan as it says it should only be saltmarsh along the estuary edge. We need to change it to say that we can have a combination of saltmarsh, rock armour, and cobble beach.

We are also taking this opportunity to update some recent works, and show more accurate locations of some facilities.

As we’ve already asked for your feedback on this as part of the 2019 Earthquake Legacy Issues project, and we know there’s strong community support to see the estuary edge repaired, we want to take a really pragmatic approach to this Plan review. We need to follow process, but we also want to keep things moving.

We’re doing a non-comprehensive review because the changes aren’t substantial and Council has already made its substantive decision on the repair of the estuary edge.

If you have any comments on the  proposed amendments to the Plan, please let us know.
