We're planning to signalise the school crossing on Heaton Street to make it way safer for kids at Heaton Intermediate and people walking, cycling and scooting across Heaton Street.

The signalised crossing will be way easier and more efficient for road users to navigate than the current crossing point, as it will stop both lanes of traffic at the same time. The crossing will still be managed by the school during peak times so kids will cross in a group, minimising overall delay.

Why we’re doing it

Heaton Intermediate School have raised concerns about the safety of the school 'kea' crossing on Heaton Street.

There are high traffic flows, especially when students are travelling to and from school. This makes the crossing difficult to operate for the school and causes confusion for all road users, creating unsafe behaviours.

We need to create a safe transport system; one where everyone can get where they are going safely.

This approach supports Road to Zero(external link), New Zealand’s road safety strategy with a vision where everyone, whether they’re walking, cycling, driving, motorcycling or taking public transport, can get to where they’re going safely.

The plan

We’re planning to install a safe crossing point for Heaton Intermediate students and others walking, cycling and scooting, to cross Heaton Street.

The work includes:

  • Installation of a signalised pedestrian crossing.
  • Installation of a raised safety platform at the signalised crossing to slow traffic, reducing the likelihood and severity of collisions.
  • Painted cycle lanes in the vicinity of the crossing.
  • Relocation of the bus stops and shelters so buses enter and exit the bus stops after the crossing.
  • Moving the P3 parking to support the bus stop relocation.
