Animal management mainly works with dogs, however, the team also works with other animals including pest control and animal removal.

Report a problem with pests, odour or insects

Alternatively, call 03 941 8999 (or 0800 800 169 for Banks Peninsula residents) for all incidents within Council-maintained areas.

For bee or wasp nests on private property or Council-leased property, contact either:

  • Christchurch Hobbyist Beekeepers' Club for advice and assistance. They may be able to help with nests and swarms. 03 313 9521
  • Or refer to Pest Controller in the Christchurch Yellow Pages.

The Council will not investigate complaints unless they are associated with specific premises.

If you have a complaint about a rooster crowing or chickens please contact us on 03 941 8999 so an Environmental Health Officer can investigate and discuss options available to you.

Please note that the Council does not impound poultry.

Rats or mice on private residential properties are the responsibility of the owner to control.

Moving stock

If you want to move stock in the urban city area or key tourist routes in Banks Peninsula, call us first to discuss it on 03 941 8999 or 0800 800 169.

Impounding stock

If you observe stock wandering uncontrolled on a road or in a public area call us on 03 941 8999 or 0800 800 169 so we can contain or impound the stock. If you have lost or found stock please report the animals by phoning 03 941 8999.

Where unclaimed stock remains at the stock pound, the Council must advertise the stock as unclaimed and must auction the animal on an advertised date and time.  Auctions are advertised through a public notice in a local newspaper at least a week prior to the auction.

Fees payable for the release of stock includes all costs incurred by the Council in the impounding of the stock (eg. trailer/truck hire) and the associated pound and seizure fees.
