The Council’s animal shelter provides proper and sufficient food, water and adequate shelter for found dogs and stock during their stay.

The dog shelter is not a good place for dogs – they belong at home with their families.  To ensure your family dog is not impounded, it is essential that it is:

  • Currently registered and micro-chipped, and the Council advised of the chip number so as to assist the dog’s swift return home.
  • Securely contained on your property to prevent the dog from wandering the streets.
  • Kept under effective control at all times when being exercised.
  • Immediately reported to Animal Management if it is lost.

If you see a dog that you'd like to adopt, you can discuss this with the shelter team.

You should be:

  • prepared to commit to the health, welfare and care of the dog for the period of its life.
  • able to provide personal identification, such as your driver's licence, passport, utility bill or birth certificate.
  • over 16 years of age.

To try and find the right fit of dog and owner, we make decisions on rehoming dogs based on a number of factors, such as:

  • the type, size and age of the dog.
  • the type of home that the dog would be suitable for.
  • the home being offered.
