Come for the run and stay for the fun.

Inspired by the 1974 Commonwealth Games marathon, the Frontrunner Christchurch Marathon has been South Island’s premier marathon event since 1981.

It is renowned as one of the flattest and fastest courses in the world, but it is also one of the most scenic and supportive.  The central city course takes in iconic Christchurch landmarks such as the Town Hall, Hagley Park, and the Avon River.

Getting in and around the city

The Frontrunner Christchurch Marathon will take place on Sunday 16 April 2023. Traffic and transport restrictions will be in place from 5.00am to 1.30pm. The Central City is open for business, please plan your travel on the day and be aware that there may be some delays.

If you’re coming in to the city centre to take part in the marathon or to cheer people on, please be aware there will be some road closures and detours in place to prevent vehicles from crossing the marathon route.

The Lichfield Street, Hereford Street and The Crossing parking buildings will all be open. You can find real time information about how many parking spaces are available in the parking buildings here(external link). Both the Art Gallery and West End carparks will have access from 1:30pm

Because of the traffic management that will be in place, it will be best to travel in and around the central city using the four avenues. Those wanting to access the central city should approach/depart from the south or east.

  • Please avoid trying to cross Kilmore St on your journey as there will be road closures on north/south routes that cross Kilmore St
  • Bus services will continue as normal but may experience some delays
  • Expect delays on key routes through and around the central city
  • If you are coming from the North East of the city and need access to Christchurch Hospital your best route is via Fitzgerald Ave and St Asaph St
  • If you are coming from the North or West of the city and need access to Christchurch Hospital your best route is via Deans Ave and Riccarton Ave
  • Walk and cycle if possible to, from and within central city
