Engineering Heritage Central City Walk

Join Engineering New Zealand for a guided walking tour of engineering heritage in the central city, led by professional engineers.

See the engineering that has shaped Christchurch City. Suitable for the general public this two-hour, three kilometre, guided tour will include various heritage sites of engineering interest. Guides will present some history of the sites and buildings, and highlight significant engineering involved in their original construction and post-earthquake restoration.

Experts involved in restoration will be present at each site. Some new builds of engineering significance will also be covered.  Heritage sites include Canterbury Museum, The Arts Centre, Canterbury Provincial Council Buildings, tramway, Christ Church Cathedral, Bridge of Remembrance, the Town Hall and Heritage Hotel. 

The walk is an extension of the self-guided App Tour Engineering New Zealand offers for Christchurch, taking you on a journey through our engineering heritage and innovative present. Explore Christchurch city's special heritage structures and the amazing engineering solutions that were developed to repair and strengthen them following the earthquakes of 2010–2011.
