Mosque attacks  |  15 Apr 2019

Christchurch agencies are working closely together to ensure a seamless response for the victims’ families, the survivors and their families and the Muslim communities affected by the 15 March mosque shootings.

One month on from the terrorist attacks at two city mosques which claimed the lives of 50 people, Christchurch Government and non-Government agencies say they are determined to ensure that everyone affected receives appropriate support and assistance. There is also a lot of effort directed at supporting the wider community.

Senior representatives of the relevant central and local government agencies have joined together locally to pool resources and expertise, to share information about needs and gaps and to streamline the provision of services.

Each of the agencies, Christchurch City Council, Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, Canterbury District Health Board, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Social Development, Police, Oranga Tamariki and Department of Corrections, and other agencies as required, is managing its own response.

However, they have identified a number of streams of activity that require immediate or long term coordination and support.

“Inspired, as we are by the response of the Muslim community, we are committed to delivering services in an empathetic and seamless way. No one should feel that they are alone. We are in this together for the long haul,” Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel says.

“The agencies have joined forces so none of those affected ever faces a wrong door. Whoever they approach can help, even if the agency they first make contact with isn’t the right place, they will find a solution and ensure help is provided.”

Each of the families is being provided with someone to help them navigate the support they need. The navigator can bring people to the family home if that will help.

Other streams of activity include workforce welfare, health and wellbeing of the city, lessons learned, support for school communities, and joined-up communications.
