Mosque attacks  |  16 Mar 2019

Messages of love and compassion are part of a mounting floral tribute to the Muslim community and those who died in Friday’s terror attack.

Floral tributes are growing.

Tributes to the victims of Friday's attack are building near the Christchurch Botanic Gardens.

Hundreds of bouquets of flowers, children’s drawings and cards have been left and many messages have been chalked on to the footpath, including one saying “We are all one”.

The tributes have been collecting outside the Christchurch Botanic Gardens since Saturday morning.

Christchurch City Council has invited people to leave flowers for the victims of Friday's shootings along the Rolleston Avenue frontage of the Botanic Gardens (near Canterbury Museum, opposite the Arts Centre).

Mary Richardson, the Council’s General Manager of Citizens and Community, says people want to pay their respects and express their sadness.

"The mountain of flowers and messages that's building outside the Botanic Gardens shows how much Christchurch residents care for our Muslim community," Ms Richardson says.

"It's also a clear sign of their absolute horror at what has happened here and their need to counter that with kindness and compassion."

A condolence book has also been set up on the ground floor of Tūranga, the central library, so people can leave messages of support and sympathy for those affected by Friday's mosque shootings.
