Hundreds of people are expected to soak up the SummerTimes sounds of Deep South Lazy Sundays in Christchurch’s Botanic Gardens over the next month.

Music fans can enjoy some of the nation’s most talented performers for free on the Archery Lawn every Sunday from now until 17 February between 3pm and 4.30pm.

They can also lick the heat with an ice cream from the on-site Deep South truck or snag a free sausage from the sizzle site.

Christchurch City Council Events and Arts Manager Karena Finnie says this year’s season features several of New Zealand’s rising stars.

“We are stoked to kick off the season with an indie mix before rocking along to a range of styles over the following weeks,” Ms Finnie says.

“Being able to enjoy the Botanic Gardens in full bloom and bring a picnic or grab an ice cream makes for a great day out for people of all ages.”

Indie trio Hans Pucket will set the scene on Sunday with an eclectic set of guitar-driven pop while Wellington-based band Onono promises to take fans on a psychedelic pop roller-coaster.

Wellington songwriter Finn Johansson rounds out the first Deep South Lazy Sunday.

A Lyttelton Record Company Showcase featuring Matthew Smith and Deep Water Creek, the Emily Fairlight Band and Tom Maxwell takes centre stage the following Sunday.

Smith mixes early rock influences with alt-country while Fairlight focuses on alternative folk music.

On 3 February, 10-piece funk and soul band Apex brings back the ‘70s, along with a few Bruno Mars classics.

High-energy gypsy roots band Yurt Party steps into the spotlight the following Sunday with modern mash-ups of folk, reggae and house. The sun sets on the Sunday season on 17 February as Lloyd and Dublet and the Ranchsliders bring a touch of the blues.
