A new interactive water pad is making a big splash with families at Jellie Park.

Christchurch City Council Head of Recreation, Sports and Events Nigel Cox says the splash pad is already very popular with pool visitors.

“The splash fountain play area is one of the coolest spots to lap up the summer scene, following on from the success of similar facilities in Scarborough Park and New Brighton,” Mr Cox says.

“The pads encourage youngsters to interact and stay active as they splash and keep cool.''

Mr Cox says new facilities and higher temperatures have drawn thousands of people to outdoor pools across the city over the past month.

“All our Council-run outdoor pools have been extremely busy over the holiday season, with visitor numbers likely to spike over the next few days as temperatures surge towards 30 degrees,” he says.

“With five outdoor pools and eight paddling pools – along with indoor facilities – there are plenty of options for families enjoying a visit to Christchurch or a ‘staycation’ in the city.

“We are certainly experiencing another bumper season driven by our fantastic new facilities, including an indoor hydroslide – complete with lights – at Jellie Park, the whale pool in New Brighton and a great indoor complex, Taiora, at QEII Park.”
